lepers in Bible times

Matt 8:2-3 A man with leprosy came and knelt before Jesus and said, "Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean."
Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. "I am willing," he said. "Be clean!" Immediately he was cured of his leprosy.

Bible study resources, including many 20th century translations, have suggested for years that "leprosy" in the Bible might be one of many skin diseases, but not (necessarily or probably) leprosy. The scholarly consensus has been that leprosy was not to be found in Israel in Bible times, but only centuries later than the close of the New Testament. As such, it is interesting to note the article linked below, filling in a knowledge gap. As has been said regarding archaeology and incomplete historical data, "absence of evidence is not (necessarily) evidence of absence."
