caf you make some very good points. Whether this or that topic or issue is considered to be one of the “deep things of God” will always be up for discussion. Man is always going to be tempted to proclaim that they have “found” the deepest understanding of what God wants.

After considering what the Scriptures say, I tend to think that the point was that we should search to know God’s ways better and that the path to that understanding is the Holy Spirit. Right before the verse you point out (1 Cor. 2:10) Paul was writing about looking to the wisdom of man “your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.” Paul comments continue to touch on the idea of “a mystery” which I believe to be God’s plan to send Jesus to provide the salvation opportunity for all (even the Gentiles). Then Paul focuses on the wonder of the reward.

What was Paul’s point? Paul talks as much about process as he does the substance of the deeper things. That doesn’t mean that we aren’t to search, but Paul was combating the idea of looking to human wisdom, rather that God’s wisdom. The deep things of God appear to me to be tied to his wisdom being supreme to men’s and I am sure that there are so many deep things of God that we will never understand them all.

To label the deep things of God being limited to his position on multiple communion cups or to say that the deep things are love, joy and peace exclusive of commandments and doctrine is wrong. It limits God wisdom and is more a display of man’s wisdom.
