We as christians cannot say that the two are mutually exclusive because we have an example of a man with free will who always chose right and always chose God's way, Jesus. It is our goal to strive to be like him.
But we always have the choice, and unfortunatly often make the choice, of not choosing right.
God has given everyone a nature, we often speak of human nature. Everything has a way that it prefers to act and be. Why is it so hard to think that since man was created in the image of God that God has a nature and preferred way of doing things? This does not limit his power or ability but only the way he chooses to use it.
Besides it is pointless to argue why God did what he did in setting up the different systems through time, because God does not necessarily have the same motives that we do. He can give us His reasons, and they will be truth, because God's nature is Truth. Will we understand? Not necessarily for God's foolishness is wiser than man's wisdom.
We do not need to understand God, but know that He is working for our benefit.
