There is punishment and then there are consequences. At a picnic if ants get into the food it is not a punishment, but a consequence. So it is with our actions good and bad. If I help someone I get a good feeling. If I tell a secret given by a friend I will loose their confidence. Adam and Eve broke the rules. They were punished and then had to live with the consequences, as do we. We are not punished for their sin. It is not held against us. We do not have to atone for it. It is not in our way of eternal salvation.
