I think that I might have a little different view here and I would appreciate your consideration of this idea.

Our batism is more about what God does for us than what we do. Sure, our faith is involved; however, I think that there is much too much emphasis placed on what man does in baptism and whether it is faith or works. My point is that it doesn't matter if its a work or not because with our baptism God does more for us than we do.

What does a person do when they are baptized?

It is an act of faith and obediance (we believe that it is what God commands) Col. 2:12
We get wet
We Die to this world – Rom. 6:2

What is done for man, by God?

Adoption as sons – Gal. 3:26-29
Placed in Jesus name (body) Acts 8:16, Acts 2:38
Salvation – 1 Pet. 3:18-22
Partaker in Jesus death, burial & resurrection – Rom. 6:1-7
Sins taken away – Acts 22:16
Added to the body – Acts 2:41
Tied to Spirit – 1 Cor. 12:13

Mk 16:16 is also a pretty good verse to consider.

My opinion: Why has baptism become less important in the mainstream "so-called" Christian groups? Because churches are bewing influenced by society too much. Society has gone through a half century of developing a greater focus on self (Humanism) and religeon has been negatively impacted. The questions become: why should I need to do this with the focus on self rather than the focus being on God and what he provides. His promise for eternal life seems to be clear to so many, maybe becasue it satisifies self. Well, to me, his promise for what is given from Him to me through my baptism is just as clear.

I understand that my opinion is an arguable point, but it makes sense to me.
