Most readers here will know that the idea of Christmas (or any Christian holiday) is not found in the Bible. The standard modern idea for the origin of Christmas is that in about the 3rd century Christians adopted the winter solstice, a time of pagan celebrations, as a holiday. The article linked below has an interesting take on the subject. While the author's attitude toward the Bible is evident in the article, and is common in Bible Review, the thesis that is set forth is not about Biblical interpretation, but about evidence relating to the supposed time of Jesus' birth from the late 2nd, 3rd and 4th centuries, which became the time of Christmas. I think the article is noteworthy in part because it clarifies (and debunks, perhaps unintentially) some of the modern attitudes toward believers of the first and second centuries. These attitudes grew out of the "enlightenment" and have become increasing commonplace among scholars and interpreters in the 19th and 20th centuries. (note: the article is not likely to be available online for more than a few weeks).
