Hi All, First I wanted to thank Dean for always taking time to include comments in his messages that possibly benefit some or all of us at any given point in life. We too, at the Dana Drive congregation in Rockford are faced with a similar dilemma. My grand-nephew Brandon, (my sister Diane's grandson) was baptized almost 2 years ago at a church in Chicago. As he began to visit us more and after we heard of his baptism we (Larry, Jenae and myself) began studying the scriptures with him to make him stronger. Soon Larry put him to work in the church (whenever he visited) and he appeared to be growing spiritually. Recently, he attended my mom's church and wanted to take communion. My mom then questioned his baptism and informed him that if it wasn't done with a church of Christ, it wasn't valid. She then called me and told me that Larry and I had done him an injustice by letting him serve in the church knowing where he was baptized. I told her that I was unaware of the exact church Brandon had been baptized in but felt that all of the studying we had done with him and showing him that it was necessary to serve in the church after baptism was not an injustice. Brandon is now spending the summer with us and Larry and I both (on separate occasions) have tried discussing and explaining to him what his great-grand mother was trying to say. We haven't let him participate in services anymore and Brandon doesn't seem to be as zealous as he was before. He doesn't quite understand what we're saying about this "real" baptism as many would call it. He understands why a person is baptized but I don't think he's getting the picture of "why him".
