I remember a discussion on this board a few years ago about depictions of violence in the movies, and the subject of Jesus' suffering as portrayed in the gosples came up, in connection with the then popular depiction of graphic WWII violence in "Saving Private Ryan." That's back on page 8 of the archives now, and particularly messages 168-169. The article linked below reminded me of thoughts expressed at that time, regarding the brevity of the gospel accounts of how Jesus was brutalized. The gospel accounts (in contrast to many religious icons) are not intended to fill our minds with images of blood and gore, and I often ponder with perplexity how people ever got side-tracked into themes like, "I'll cherish the old rugged cross."
