The deep things of God

I had a great breakfast this morning with several of the guys at Anaheim, and the topic of the "deep things of God" came up.

The question I'd like to pose is if the deep things of God are deeply reasoned and intellectually formed doctrines and truths (let's say, types and shadows of Christ) or are they things like the fruits of the spirit and "bringing every thought into captivity" to Him?

What role do deeply thought-out, esoteric doctrines play in our faith? A central role? A supporting role? A cameo role?
